Windows 11 won’t Sleep– You’re in the middle of an important task on your Windows 11 laptop and you have to take a break to go do something, but before you walk away. 

You shut the lid of your computer and put it to sleep so it will automatically wake up after 5 minutes, giving you enough time to finish what you need to do before continuing with your task.

1) Adjust your power settings

Adjusting your power settings can fix the issue of Windows not sleeping. To do this, click on the battery icon in the taskbar and click Power Options. Select Choose what the power button does, then select Do Nothing and hit save. 

The next time you press the power button on your laptop or close your laptop’s lid, it will go into sleep mode as expected.

If that doesn’t work, try using Task Manager: Open Task Manager by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL. 

Go to the Processes tab and find svchost.exe. Right-click on it and select End Process Tree from the dropdown menu

2) Check for updates

The first thing to do is ensure that you’re running the latest version of Windows. Updating Windows will give you access to all the latest and greatest features, as well as bug fixes and security patches. 

To check if you have the latest version, head to Settings > Update & Security > Check for Updates. If you don’t see any updates available, try searching for Windows updates on your Start Menu or in your Cortana search bar. 

You’ll need a password if your computer requires one. For non-business computers, Microsoft usually releases new updates on Patch Tuesday — so keep an eye out for it then!

3) Scan for malware

Scan your machine and remove any malware, then try running a disk clean-up utility. If that doesn’t work, try disabling some of the applications you don’t use often or are not compatible with Windows 11. 

You can also disable audio devices if they’re not needed, then restart your computer and see if it goes back to sleep. If that doesn’t work, open up the Task Manager by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and select the Processes tab. 

Look for processes that might be preventing your PC from sleeping (such as anti-malware programs), then right-click on them and select End Process from the menu bar. Restart your computer again and see if it goes back to sleep.

4) Check your drivers

Check your computer’s drivers. If they are up-to-date, this could be the issue. If you’re using a laptop or tablet, check the power settings and make sure the battery is not set to Hibernate. 

Make sure the screen saver is not set for more than 10 minutes and that it’s not set to Never. Some users have had luck by downloading a new graphics driver from their device manufacturer’s website. 

Check what programs may be running in the background. Sometimes your antivirus software could cause issues with sleep mode, so try disabling it temporarily.

5) Run the troubleshooter

The first thing you should do is run the troubleshooter. This will help fix any problems that could be causing your computer not to sleep. To get started, press Windows Key + S and type in sleep troubleshooter. 

You can also search for it from the taskbar. Follow the onscreen instructions and when it’s done, restart your computer and see if that helps. If that doesn’t work, try these solutions:

1) Turn off the Fast Startup feature: Turning this feature off may allow your PC to sleep normally again. 

To turn it off, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > System Settings > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable (near the bottom) and uncheck the Turn on fast startup option. 

2) Disable Hyper-V or VirtualBox – these are very popular virtualization tools that may be preventing your system from sleeping normally. 

A quick way to disable either of these programs is by running Command Prompt as administrator (search Command Prompt on the Start menu or just right-click the Command Prompt icon) then type powercfg -h OFF followed by the Enter key.

6) Perform a clean boot

A clean boot is a troubleshooting step that can help you identify which software or hardware component is causing the issue. To perform a clean boot in Windows, follow these steps:

  1.  Close all open programs and windows.
  2. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to open the task manager.
  3. Select File > New Task (Run).
  4. Type CMD and hit Enter on your keyboard.
  5. Type Msconfig without quotes in the text box and hit Enter on your keyboard.
  6. In the System Configuration window, select the General tab, then click the Selective Startup button and check off Load Startup Items and click OK.

7) Restore your PC

Sometimes, your computer may not sleep when you tell it to. When this happens, it’s usually because a program or process is running in the background. The best way to fix this is by using Task Manager. 

Open Task Manager by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESC on your keyboard. 

Go to the Processes tab at the top of the screen, find any programs that are listed as Not Responding and click on them individually until they respond.

8) Check for hardware issues

Check your computer’s power settings. Your PC may be set up to never sleep in order to save battery life or because you don’t want it running when you’re not using it. If so, change the settings back. 

You can also check your BIOS and make sure the power management is enabled and set for automatic power-saving modes.

If that doesn’t work, try installing new drivers for your graphics card and audio card. If they are out of date or corrupted, they might be causing the problem with sleep mode.

9) Use the System File Checker

One of the most common causes of sleep problems is a Windows system file getting corrupted. To check if this is the case, you can run the System File Checker tool. Here’s hoType SFC /scan now and hit enter 

4) When it has been completed, restart your computer and try to go into sleep mode again. 

5) If that didn’t work, use DISM to fix any corruption

6) Open an elevated command prompt 

7) Enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth 

8) Restart your computer 

9) Try going into sleep mode again.

10) Try a different power plan

Power plans are important for conserving energy and saving money on your electric bill. Windows 10 has a variety of power plans you can choose from, but sometimes an old standby like Power Saver can be the best way to go. 

If you’re having trouble with your PC not going into sleep mode and instead showing signs of activity while in idle or off, try changing your power plan:

  1.  Click the battery icon in the taskbar 
  2. Select Power Options
  3. Select Change Plan Settings
  4. Change the power plan
  5. . Scroll down and select Choose When To Turn Off The Display. 
  6. Select Never.
